Verify before writing
Compare the checksum of the file you downloaded with the one shown above. If they differ, the download is damaged, not the image.
On Linux or macOS, in the folder where you saved the download:
sha256sum -c moonlightos-26.04.5-bengunur-amd64.iso.sha256
On Windows, in PowerShell, compare the printed hash with the one in the .sha256 file:
Get-FileHash .\moonlightos-26.04.5-bengunur-amd64.iso -Algorithm SHA256
Get-Content .\moonlightos-26.04.5-bengunur-amd64.iso.sha256

Next steps
- Write the image to a USB stick
A plain block copy is enough: dd on Linux and macOS, Rufus in DD mode, balenaEtcher or Ventoy on Windows.
- Start from the stick
Secure Boot can stay enabled. Choose Try or Install from the menu.
- Try it, then install
The live session is the complete system. The installer is the icon on the desktop.
What the image contains
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS base, Ubuntu's generic kernel, the complete linux-firmware set, Intel and AMD microcode, and the NVIDIA driver for offline installations
Cinnamon with the MoonLight themes, LightDM with Slick Greeter, and the Calamares installer with LUKS2 encryption
Firefox with uBlock Origin, Thunderbird, Geary, LibreOffice, VLC, GIMP and the complete set of codecs
The fourteen MoonTools and the six settings pages, translated into nine languages
Visual Studio Code, the compiler toolchain, Python, Node.js, Rust, Go, Java 21 and Docker Engine
Wine with DXVK and VKD3D, fingerprint and face unlock, VPN clients, printer and scanner drivers
The Italian language pack on the image; other languages can be downloaded with one click
What has been tested
The image is built and then started under QEMU, and the screenshots on this site come from those sessions, not from mock-ups.
| UEFI start | Firmware → Canonical shim → signed GRUB → kernel. The menu appears and the countdown runs. |
|---|---|
| Legacy BIOS start | El Torito image and hybrid MBR. Same menu, same animation. |
| Startup animation | Logo still, halo pulsing between frames, progress bar advancing. |
| Live desktop | Reached and stable: wallpaper, desktop icons, Start button, centred dock, status area. |
| Welcome and setup | The wizard and the Welcome window open and switch language immediately. |
| Image contents | More than 120 build-time checks, from the kernel to the bundled uBlock Origin extension; the build refuses to produce an ISO if any fails. |
| Installed system | The squashfs is checked for a kernel and an initramfs, so an installation can never end up with nothing to start from. |
Not yet tested on real hardware at the time of writing: Secure Boot enforcement with a manufacturer's own keys, fingerprint enrolment on a physical sensor, and the installer writing to a real disk. If you try any of these, a report is welcome.

MoonLightOS is built from one repository with one command. Everything that produces it, the build scripts, the themes, the applications and the translations, is free software.
./build.sh # bootstrap → customise → squash → ISO
./build.sh rootfs # stop after the system is customised
./build.sh image # re-pack an existing rootfs into a new ISO
./build.sh finish # bootloaders + ISO only, reusing the squashfs
./build.sh shell # a prompt inside the build environment
./build.sh clean # throw the scratch volume away
