Licensing
The MoonLightOS build system, themes, configuration and applications are free software: you can redistribute them and modify them under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License or, at your option, any later version. They are distributed in the hope that they will be useful, but without any warranty.
Covered by the GPL-3.0-or-later: the build scripts, the build environment, the configuration, the package lists, the tools, the installer configuration, the documentation and everything under rootfs/, that is the MoonLight applications, the GTK, Cinnamon and window manager themes, and the startup animation script.
Not covered by that licence: the source logo and the photographic wallpapers are the property of their author. They are included with permission for use in MoonLightOS, and the artwork generated from them has the same status. They may not be redistributed outside this distribution and this website.
The packages MoonLightOS installs from the Ubuntu repository, from packages.mozilla.org, from packages.microsoft.com and from Flathub each have their own licence, recorded on an installed system under /usr/share/doc/<package>/copyright. Visual Studio Code, as distributed by Microsoft, is released under a proprietary licence; the image can be built without it.

MoonLightOS is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Canonical Ltd., Linux Mint, the Cinnamon project, Mozilla or Microsoft. Ubuntu is a trademark of Canonical Ltd. Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds. Firefox and Thunderbird are trademarks of the Mozilla Foundation. Visual Studio Code and Windows are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. Other names belong to their respective owners.
Privacy on this website
- Language chosen from your location
The server looks up the country of your IP address in a database stored on the server itself, to choose the language the site opens in. The lookup never leaves the server and no third party is involved. If you choose a language yourself, a single cookie named ml_lang remembers it for a year; it contains the language code and nothing else.
- No analytics, no third parties
This site sets no tracking cookies, loads no scripts, fonts or images from other domains, and runs no analytics. The fonts are served from this site.
- Server logs
The web server keeps ordinary access logs for operation and security, with the last part of each IP address removed before the log is written.
- The operating system itself
An installed MoonLightOS system sends nothing anywhere on its own, apart from checking for and downloading security updates from the configured repositories and updating the store's catalogue.
IP geolocation by DB-IP (IP to Country Lite, CC BY 4.0) unless the operator supplies another database.
